Small Talk: RON SEXSMITH

Who are you and what do you do:
I’m Ron Sexsmith and I’m a singer-songwriter mostly (professional coffee drinker too).

Current obsessions:
Um…I like that TV show “Girls” quite a bit and “Breaking Bad” (can’t wait for the last 8 shows)
I love this restaurant Hibiscus in Kensington market too (Amazing soup and salad combo!)
Jack Teagarden’s album “Think Well Of Me” from 1962

A song or a record that will always put you in a good mood, without fail:
Anything by Sam Cooke or Bill Withers basically
I love “I Flathead” by Ry Cooder
“Ariel Ballet” by Nilsson
“The Impossible Bird” by Nick Lowe

Tell us about an album or artist you think is really under-appreciated, and why they are deserving of more praise:
I think Kyp Harness is really under-appreciated but what else is new. He’s one of the best lyricist’s ever in my opinion… he’s a true poet. Lori Cullen is one of the best singers in town, I can’t believe she’s not a big star.

Most played track on your iTunes:
I don’t really listen to iTunes to be honest.

Most cherished musical object:
I’d have to say my upright piano.

Proudest moment:
Playing Massey Hall for the first time and then playing Royal Albert Hall recently. And just surviving the music industry in general is something I’m proud of.

Most vulnerable moment:
Anytime I have to do a photo shoot or video shoot I feel very vulnerable and limited.

If you could score a film for anyone, who would it be any why:
Wes Anderson… I love all of his movies.

Your favourite use of a song in a film:
“I Am Waiting” by the Rolling Stones and “Here Comes My Baby” by Cat Stevens in the film Rushmore
“Perfect Day” by Nilsson in the movie All That Jazz
“In Dreams” by Roy Orbison in the film Blue Velvet

Favourite venue to play in and why:
Massey Hall… it’s hard to explain.

Dream venue to play in and why:
Well, I’ve already played it (see above answer).

First band t-shirt you ever purchased from a merch table:
Elton John t-shirt at an Elton John show in ’76.

Band you’d leave your bandmates for:
The Kinks I guess or perhaps The GO GO’s.

Album you want to expose your kin to whilst in the womb:
Phoebe Snow’s debut record.

If for some reason you lost the ability to make and play music, what would fill that gap:
Nothing.

What was your last dream about:
I think I was kidnapped by somebody (but it’s all kind of vague right now).
