By Divine Right – ‘Organized Accidents’

Review by Christina Bell

Staying true to their legacy, By Divine Right has made an album that fervently throws you back into the late ‘90s Canadian indie rock scene. Organized Accidents wastes no time, hooking you at track number one, “Mutant Message.” This catchy tune couples heavenly boy/girl harmonies with swift instrumentals and space age-y aural effects. “Mutant Message” sets a tone for the album that flows like a melancholy summer day — think sunny summer mornings followed by sluggish humid afternoons; songs that are bursts of energy peter out into more mellow tracks. The guitars are bright and the vocals are both sharp and breezy, accented by seemingly effortless harmonies.

Lyrically, the album relates a healthy dose of indie angst — see track titles such as “No One Can Fix Me.” The overall theme is a familiar, broken-hearted-but-don’t-care attitude that channels through most songs.

My favourite BDR track, “Zoomies,” surprised me, appearing discreetly in the middle of the album.  “Zoomies” alluringly flirts with a more shoe-gaze style. Because it’s so subtle, it’s the kind of song that you don’t realize you love until you hear it at five in the morning, half asleep in the hazy light of the sunrise.

Ultimately, Organized Accidents had me absent-mindedly humming By Diving Right tunes for days. Listening will probably have you pining for the heyday of indie rock, in all its glory.
