Small Talk: CAM MALCOLM

Who are you and what do you do:
Cam Malcolm’s the name. Musician for hire. Sometimes solo-artist, sometimes band member.

Current obsessions:
Vashti Bunyan’s first record, and Stephen Malkmus’ latest.

A song or a record that will always put you in a good mood, without fail:
“The Ballad of El Goodo” from Big Star’s #1 Record

Tell us about an album or artist you think is really under-appreciated, and why they are deserving of more praise:
Judee Sill’s first record, Judee Sill. It’s a really strange yet amazingly beautiful record. The lyrics are really Christian, but not in a way that’s necessarily off-putting like a lot of that stuff can be. They’re kind of fantasy-based magical christian lyrics. And the music is incredible. Amazing melodies, orchestras, pedal steels, folky guitar. It’s the real deal!

Most played track on your iTunes:

I just checked, and it’s Salvador Sanchez by Sun Kil Moon.

Most cherished musical object:
Probably my old Gibson SG.

Proudest moment:
I was pretty excited when I played Halifax, Nova Scotia for the first time with Mike O’Neill (from The Inbreds). Childhood dreams CAN come true kids.

Most vulnerable moment:
I’ve probably blocked it out!

If you could score a film for anyone, who would it be and why:
I’ve got an idea about a fictional film about Hamilton, Ontario. I’m not sure who’s gonna direct it yet, but it’s gonna be like Manhattan by Woody Allen. But set in Hamilton. Anyways it’s gonna be all Hamilton artists and the first scene is all these like five seconds cut scenes of downtown Hamilton and the song is “Super Hans” by Slow Hand Motem. That’s my idea. Filmmakers please get in touch with me.

Your favourite use of a song in a film:
Ooh La La by The Faces for the last scene in Rushmore, but I also have a huge soft spot for the way they use Led Zeppelin’s Tangerine in Almost Famous.

Favourite venue to play in and why:
There’s a festival in Dunville called “The Kentucky Hill Music Festival” and you play in a 52 foot van trailer with the side wall cut out. Best stage ever.

Dream venue to play in and why:
I’d like to play Budokan, but only as a member of Cheap Trick.

First band t-shirt you ever purchased from a merch table:
“THE FLASHING LIGHTS ARE ON” from The Flashing Lights when they opened for Sloan at Massey Hall in 2000. I thought they were Supergrass at first.

Band you’d leave your bandmates for:
The Guess Who, if they reformed.

Album you want to expose your kin to whilst in the womb:
Steve Miller Band’s greatest hits.

If for some reason you lost the ability to make and play music, what would fill that gap:
Hopefully learn how to cook.

What was your last dream about:
Can’t remember!
