Small Talk: MAYLEE TODD

Who are you and what do you do:
My name is Maylee Todd aka nardo. I create different forms of art through music and video. I also work with people at different capacities; children ages 5-7 at an afterschool program, focusing on music, art and dance. And I work as a freelance personal trainer rehabilitation to function ages 25-91.

Current obsessions:
Jodorowsky, naturopathic medicine, plants, mental function and seaweed.

A song or a record that will always put you in a good mood, without fail:
Novos Baianos- Ferro Na Boneca

Most played track on your iTunes:
Patrice Rushen: Gotta Find it

Most cherished musical object:
The tenori-on. I bought it second hand. It is the most valuable instrument, I can write music on buses, and planes without disturbing anyone, and it’s really easy to use.

Proudest moment:
The day I realized I had free will.

Most vulnerable moment:
I had a gun pointed at me just outside of the Favelas in Porto de Galinhas in Brazil. I felt pretty vulnerable, it was in a dark alley, I was wearing just a bikini, had a pizza in one hand and a bag in the other. This situation could’ve gone many ways. He took my bag, and left my vagina and pizza in that dark alley way alone. Not even a taste. Ps the dude totally looked like Sisqo.

If you could score a film for anyone, who would it be and why:
Alejandro Jodorowsky. His films are some of the most aesthetically inspiring pieces of work. It would be a honor to score one of his films. Though I know he used to score his own films. Maybe I can do a soundtrack to one of his graphic novels. Maybe I’ve already started.

Your favourite use of a song in a film:
There are alot of composers I love and respect. Bob Crewe’s “Hello Pretty, Pretty” in the 1969 film Barbarella. It’s the scene where the Great Tyrant first appears in the City of Night, Soho. She makes advances on Barbarella and Barbarella (Jane Fonda) rejects her. That whole soundtrack is pretty good on it’s own.

Favourite venue to play in and why:
The Embassy in Kensington market, there’s no real sound system, but it’s small and I’ve had some amazing experiences there. It was also the first venue I played as a solo performer.

Dream venue to play in and why:
I say Massey Hall (because Eamon said it), and I can’t think of any. Does space count or in the mind of Alejandro Jodorowsky?

First band t-shirt you ever purchased from a merch table:
I don’t think I’ve ever done this to be honest. Though I do have memories of purchasing a Rage Against the Machine t-shirt in grade 6 from Backstage pass. I also wore socks on my arms, sooo ya.

Band you’d leave your bandmates for:
Bjork or Cornelius, it’s obvious. I like their processes for recording. Can you image sampling exploding volcano’s, water, creating and building new instruments, then writing music to it. That world is very exciting for me. I’d like to create some of my own instruments in the future.

Album you want to expose your kin to whilst in the womb:
ESG- A South Bronx Story. Dis baby be DANCIN!

What was your last dream about:
My dreams are usually pretty dark. I have very strange reoccurring dreams about being chased. And for some reason, I can’t remember the last dream I’ve had.
