Who are you and what do you do:
I am Nathan Rekker. I write, sing and play guitar in the band SPORTS.
Current obsessions:
I’m currently obsessed with historical photos and stories of Toronto. I recently bought a book called “Toronto to 1918” from a store called “The Monkey’s Paw”.
A song or a record that will always put you in a good mood, without fail:
Recently Django Reinhardt puts me in a good mood.
Tell us about an album or artist you think is really under-appreciated, and why they are deserving of more praise:
I listen to Television’s Marquee Moon a lot. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t appreciate that album.
Most played track on your iTunes:
“Why won’t you make up your mind” Tame Impala. It almost sounds like a mash DJ produced this. I keep hearing so many familiar sounds and melodies but it still sounds fresh.
Most cherished musical object:
My Dad’s ’68 Martin D-18 Acoustic. Its not mine, but I taught myself to play on it, and I often go home and try and sneak home with it.
Proudest moment:
My proudest moment is when I realized I could write a decent song and that people actually wanted to make music with me.
Most vulnerable moment:
Standing at a mic with an acoustic guitar and playing songs I’m not sure about. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
If you could score a film for anyone, who would it be and why:
I’d love to score something by Jean-Luc Godard. I will always remember how I felt after seeing ‘Breathless’ for the first time.
Your favourite use of a song in a film:
Highway to the Dangerzone – Top Gun. Put me in a theatre and I will stand up and pump my fist, i don’t even care.
Favourite venue to play in and why:
Our next show in Shayne’s bedroom will be the best venue. I once played the the ACC back when the radio station Edge102 cared about new music. That was a riot.
Dream venue to play in and why:
I should really care about these things. People often say Grand Ol Opry, so i’ll go with that.
First band t-shirt you ever purchased from a merch table:
13 Engines t shirt at the Moon Room, in Oshawa Ontario.
Band you’d leave your bandmates for:
I would drop everything to play with Miles Davis circa 1959. I listen to “Kind of Blue” wayyyy too much.
Album you want to expose your kin to whilst in the womb:
Probably whatever the woman carrying my baby wanted to listen to. I’d take requests.
If for some reason you lost the ability to make and play music, what would fill that gap:
I’d love to build furniture for musicians to sit and play.
What was your last dream about:
I dreamt that I was finally flying straight and lucid.
