Small Talk: TAYLOR KNOX

Who are you and what do you do:
I am Taylor and I play music and do dishes and laudry sometimes too. I also record music, and help other people record it using microphones, and sometimes just right into the board.

Current obsessions:
Water, Coconut Water, Tank Tops, and The Stooges first album

A song or a record that will always put you in a good mood, without fail:
The Beatles “The Beatles” (1968) cause it reminds me of being a kid when I first listened to the record that my parents had. I can still smell the record sleeve every time I hear it. And then “Dear Prudence” comes on and I forget all that stuff, cause it’s just so good. Also pretty much anything by Neil Young puts me in a good mood.

Tell us about an album or artist you think is really under-appreciated, and why they are deserving of more praise:
There is a band called Alvvays that I have had the pleasure of playing the drums with a handful of times. Their album has yet to be released but it is so perfect I am completely jealous.

Most played track on your iTunes:
Deerhoof “The Perfect Me” probably because it’s the first CD I bought when I got this computer. But listening to it now, I think it will stay in the lead for a while. I aspire to one day be this good at the drums.

Most cherished musical object:
The songs in my head. Also my dad’s old record player that he bought before I was born, and I am still listening to right now.

Proudest moment:
Any time I listen back to a recording that I have been involved in and I think it sounds good.

Most vulnerable moment:
Same time

If you could score a film for anyone, who would it be any why:
Wes Anderson. But I would just do what he does and pick my favourite Kinks tunes, and then get Mark Mothersbaugh to do the rest!

Your favourite use of a song in a film:
The Kinks “Strangers” in The Darjeeling Limited. Even though the throwing of the baggage is a bit of a heavy handed metaphor, Adrien Brody still looks awesome doing it in slow-mo. Also I loved the song so much before I ever saw the movie, so I was excited just to hear it start.

Favourite venue to play in and why:
Anywhere I get to play my own music and have it sound the way I like it.

Dream venue to play in and why:
Massey Hall, for every reason.

First band t-shirt you ever purchased from a merch table:
Sloan

Band you’d leave your bandmates for:
No way

Album you want to expose your kin to whilst in the womb:
Neu! so that they start out knowing that slow and steady wins the race.

If for some reason you lost the ability to make and play music, what would fill that gap:
Listening to music.

What was your last dream about:
I love having dreams and I don’t have them as often as I’d like, but I did have one just last night. I was sitting on my friend Morty’s couch at his parents house, and there was a big storm coming in across the sky (which we could somehow see from the couch). Outside there was a round building sort of like the Capital Records building in L.A., and it was violently swaying in the wind. A great gust of wind came and literally blew the roof off. It was pretty Rock & Roll.
